The Law of Thumb

Somebody who thinks logically is a nice contrast to the real world.
- The Law of Thumb

If something is repeated often enough, does it make it true?

The Law of Thumb is a phrase that's been used for over 300 years, yet some have perverted it's meaning recently, making it relate to wife beating.

Read below to debunk this idea.

...The 'rule of thumb' story is an example of revisionist history that feminists happily fell into believing. It reinforces their perspective on society, and they tell it as a way of winning converts to their angry creed...
The 'rule of thumb', however, turns out to be an excellent example of what may be called a feminist fiction. Is is not to be found in William Blackstone's treatise on English common law. On the contrary, British law since the 1700s and our American laws predating the Revolution prohibit wife beating, though there have been periods and places in which the prohibition was only indifferently enforced.

That the phrase did not even originate in legal practice could have been ascertained by any fact-checker who took the trouble to look it up in the Oxford English Dictionary, which notes that the term has been used metaphorically for at least three hundred years to refer to any method of measurement or technique of estimation derived from experience rather than science.

Here is the reason I've not been able to post on this blog several times this month.

Maggie is a silky little ball of hair. She is busy constantly eating, drinking and...  No wonder she is over twice the size she was this time last month. She is growing SO fast and needs constant attention.

I'm not complaining. As a matter of fact, I'm very glad to have her around...even when she is biting at my ankles.

Well this is another night without the fireworks layouts. MAybe by Christmas, I'll get them done.

Good night.  Sweet dreams.

Walk the Walk

I love these pictures of Beth and Caleb on the fish. It's not every day that can happen.

Surely it won't be long now until I can finally get some Independence Day joy posted here. I took way too many pictures to let the opportunity pass us by.

Today I came across a quote that is worth repeating. I found it in my Wordles puzzle email for the day.

"It is no use walking anywhere to preach unless our walking is our preaching."

Public School Prayer

Caleb flirts with the mirror at the Rio on Mother's Day while waiting for their dinners.

Since the Pledge of Allegiance and the Lord's Prayer are not allowed in most
Public schools anymore , because the word God is mentioned.....
A kid in Arizona    wrote the this:

"New Pledge of Allegiance"

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now I sit me down in school
Where praying is against the rule
For this great nation under God
Finds mention of Him very odd.
If scripture now the class recites,
It violates the Bill of Rights.
And anytime my head I bow
Becomes a Federal matter now.
Our hair can be purple, orange or green,
That's no offense; it's a freedom scene..
The law is specific, the law is precise.
Prayers spoken aloud are a serious vice.
For praying in a public hall
Might offend someone with no faith at all..
In silence alone we must meditate,
God's name is prohibited by the state.
We're allowed to cuss and dress like freaks,
And pierce our noses, tongues and cheeks...
They've outlawed guns, but FIRST the Bible.
To quote the Good Book makes me liable.
We can elect a pregnant Senior Queen,
And the unwed daddy,' our Senior King.
It's inappropriate to teach right from wrong,
We're taught that such judgment's do not belong..
We can get our condoms and birth controls,
Study witchcraft, vampires and totem poles ...
But the Ten Commandments are not allowed,
No word of God must reach this crowd.
It's scary here I must confess,
When chaos reigns the school's a mess.
So, Lord, this silent plea I make:
Should I be shot; My soul please take!
Amen
Better Late Than Never
I was looking through Chelle's scrapbook and noticed this picture of Ashley which I had never seen.  That is unusual. It had been taken in February of this year. I generally get digi copies of all the good pictures.
I was anxious to do my own layout with it, so Chelle sent it to my computer and I just now sat down and came up with this rendition for my own book. I love the colors and the bright smile.  And of course, I love Ashley.
Independence Day 2013
Even though this picture was taken back in May of this year, it fits the color scheme for today's activities.
 I haven't done any layouts yet for this fantastic day, but I do have some shots I took as we sat lakeside here watching the neighbor's set off their fireworks display in the area where Sandy Beach Amusement park was when I was a young child. This has become a yearly event in the neighborhood. Last year, I watched them from my window here by the computer.
As we celebrate our independence from Britain today, many in Egypt are demonstrating their abhorrence of our country, particularly our president,  for supporting the Muslim Brotherhood over the peace loving  majority in that country.
Check  here for that story.
When is a violin a fiddle?
When is a violin a fiddle? I ask this because I haven't taken the time to google it and some how I have reached 70 and still don't know.
In any case, the story isn't much about the instrument, but about the girl with a rash. This is Ashley (I'll get to see her soon.) and she had broken out in a rash with an allergy to sulfa drugs. I, her gramma, suffered the same fate when I was a little girl.  She is fine now, but when the picture was taken she wasn't feeling great.  However, she didn't stay at home, but went to a scout meeting where she had the opportunity to 'play' a violin. She looks to me like she should maybe take lessons, but I'm not sure she is interested in the proposition.  I think instead that she is just fiddling around.
Puppy news: I had a traumatic couple of hours this morning with Maggie. She wanted to chew on my legs which were bare below my capri length pj's.  She kept attacking, grabbing those legs and shaking them. Her little sharp teeth stung my old thin skinned ankles. Finally natural  consequences helped. As I walked, she was caught between my legs and first thrown right and then immediately left. It frightened her enough that she went directly to her crate for protection. After her nap she was a much better dog the rest of the day. She was rewarded with a treat multiple times today for 'going' outdoors.
She also learned very quickly the command, 'Come'. That will be a blessing, as up to now, I would lose her in the house and have to search everywhere to find her.
By the way, Obamacare had a set-back today.  Medium and large companies have another year until 2015 before they have to provide coverage for their workers or face fines. I  pray it will be struck down before it completely kills business in this country.
Fourth Generation
Photography  has been one of my loves. I'm not saying I'm good at it. I am not.  But I do have a good eye. I follow in my mother's footsteps. She was artistic and loved photography. She even had a darkroom at our home when I was young.  Our daughter, Chelle and our son, John have also shown an interest  in the field. They are both much better than I.  Their children, the triplets...Ashley, Aussie and Mason and now Caleb seem to have a talent as well.
Here, Caleb has acquired the old camera. He shoots photos every chance he gets. I hope sometime soon to do a layout of pictures he has taken.  Actually, I believe last year I added a picture he took on one of my layouts.
It is warming to see our children and grand children grow in appreciation of the same things we like.
They imitate us.
Young parents...be careful what you do.  Little ones are watching you.
