Purple Martins on Portage Lakes
For those of you who may not be familiar with the Purple Martin, they are the largest of the North American swallows. The martins in the eastern states make homes near people. They like the human interaction. Here at the Portage Lakes there are many gourds and other homes that have been set up for the martins. In winter months when it is difficult for the birds to find food, the lakers feed them things like scrambled eggs and in exchange, the Martins eat lots and lots of flying insects during other months.
